More Is Less - Why I'm Going On A "No Buy"

More Is Less - Why I'm Going On A "No Buy"

As it became clear to me that Mr. F2P and I were finally reaching a significant financial milestone last year, I started taking my foot off the saving gas for a bit and ramped up my consumption

I won't deny that it was fun at first. You know that feeling that comes from being a more reckless version of yourself, of throwing caution to the wind? Of course, my version of this wasn't so extreme but you get the idea.

Scratch That 007 - What Bond Can Teach Us About What Matters

Bond fever has struck again now that Spectre has landed in our neighbourhood theatres. I’m fascinated by the fact that Ian Fleming’s James Bond character has attracted fans for generations and appears to still have enough momentum to continue on for some time.

Part of the attraction we have towards this character is that, though he feels confident enough about being surrounded by riches, he doesn’t feel beholden to the objects or to his surroundings.

Fourth Update - Living More with Less in 2015

On January 15, I declared that I was going to live a simpler and richer life by having and buying less stuff and doing more of what matters. I'd outlined three main themes as part of this plan:

  1. Don’t buy anything unless it’s urgent - yes, it’s a flexible definition and relates more to fixed goods than consumables.
  2. Use (and enjoy) what I have.
  3. Focus on spending time with, and giving to, others.

In March, May and July, I published my first three updates. Based on these, my average so far is a “B”. Not bad, but I’ve vowed I can do better.

Have I? Let’s take a look.

Second Update - Living More with Less in 2015

On January 15, I declared that I was going to live a simpler and richer life by having and buying less stuff and doing more of what matters. I had outlined three main themes as part of my plan:

  1. Don’t buy anything unless it’s urgent - yes, it’s a flexible definition.

  3. Focus on spending time with and giving to others.

In March, I reported my first two months, giving myself an overall score of B- because I could have done a better job in the first two categories. Have I improved my performance over March and April? Let's take a look.

First Update - Living More with Less in 2015

On January 15, I declared that I was going to live a simpler and richer life by having and buying less stuff and doing more of what matters. I had outlined three main themes as part of my plan:

  1. Don’t buy anything unless it’s urgent - yes, it’s a flexible definition but I’ll update the blog with a tally of purchases made.
  2. Use (and enjoy) what I have.
  3. Focus on spending time with and giving to others.

Well, with January and February behind us I'm here to report back on my progress. Let's dive into each of the themes above and see how things are going.

Do You Have A "To Don't" List? (You should & here's why.)

We lead busy lives. We need to go places, get things, leave things, send things, receive things...you get my drift. There are only so many hours in the day that we can devote to getting things done and we try to organize ourselves to work as efficiently as possible, to cram as much as possible into every single day. Many of us feel we'd be lost without our calendar, reminders, task lists, alarms and sticky notes.

What about your "to don't" list? Do you have one of those?
