I don’t often write about basic personal finance principles on this blog, but I will jump in on a recent trend I’m noticing on YouTube. I'm seeing various bloggers/vloggers repeating the following advice, especially when it comes to what I would consider luxury or "treat yourself" type of items…Read More
I’ve had some feedback lately about my post titled More Is Less. The intention with that post is not to punish myself for my consumption, far from it.
The point of the "No Buy" challenge is to get in touch with what is far more satisfying than standard consumerism:

I purchased an iPhone this past September, an iPhone SE to be exact. (Here’s the post, if you want some background.)
This past Tuesday, I went out with some girlfriends and all was good, until the ride home. Two of us were lucky enough to get a ride home. We made our first stop to drop off friend #1.
And that’s when it happened.Read More
There are very different ways of interpreting that question.
I was rereading the book Your Money Or Your Life recently, and two of its passages brought me back to my mid-twenties:
"Other people’s expectations don’t make you buy stuff. TV does not make you buy stuff. Your thoughts make you buy stuff. Watch those suckers. They’re dangerous to your pocketbook—and to a lot more." - p. 194.
"'Quality of life' often goes down as “'standard of living' goes up. There is a peak to the Fulfillment Curve—spending more after you’ve reached the peak will bring less fulfillment." - p. 300.Read More
The online Personal Finance community talks a great deal about the cost of payday loan operations—especially now that they’re popping up on every corner and seem more pervasive than McDonald’s. We also talk about our out-of-control consumerism that leads us towards spiralling levels of debt, especially credit card debt and HELOCs. But there’s one thing we don’t talk about enough when it comes to what can put a dent into our finances: fines & traffic violations.
Mr. F2P and I were painfully reminded of this fact last week. He and I had a lot on our plate and a scarcity mindset [in this case a lack of time] created by our respective preoccupations left us a distracted mess.Read More
I had an experience this Spring that I just can’t get out of my mind, which means I probably should share it with you.
As I sometimes do when I want a change of pace, I go to one of three coffee shops within walking distance of our home. I’m waiting in line for my free refill and notice this guy two spots ahead of me, pacing back and forth from his spot to the window and back.Read More
On September 7, 2016, Apple introduced the iPhone 7. A little corny, but ok. The presentation was as slick as it usually is and all geeks were riveted as though it was 1984 all over again, mostly because this is the 10-year edition of the iPhone (June 29, 2007)....
And for me, it's time for a new one.Read More
I've already posted an article about gardening and included our garden in my list of 10 favourite things, but I can't help writing about it again because I think it's a fundamental part of enabling a person to live on their terms.
If you have any outdoor space, or near-outdoor space, at all—front yard, back yard, side yard, sunroom, balcony—I encourage you to grow something...even if it's only a window sill on which to grow herbs.
I used to get a manicure and pedicure every month or so in my spendthrift days, but now I go for a pedicure only once or twice a year or when my feet are in major need of a little TLC .
Now that I’m doing more public speaking, which means wearing uncomfortable dress shoes more often, it was time for another appointment. I asked if Mr. F2P if he wanted to come with me, given his feet could also use some attention thanks to the abuse they endure at the hand of his nasty steel-toed boots. He said "Absolutely!".Read More
For the most part, we don’t spend much on this thing called life, except when it comes to groceries and travel. So, when Mr. F2P mentions that he’s in need of jeans or sports attire, he means he needs jeans and sports attire. He mentioned a need for sports attire a number of weeks ago and since then I’ve been on the look out for some replacements.Read More
