There’s reality, and then there’s the lie that perpetuates it.
The reality is that it costs more to be a woman in this world.
Let me count the ways...Read More
Young or old, which one are you?
The better question might be: Which one do you want to be over the long term?
This past weekend Mr. F2P and I found ourselves mingling with a group of old and young. This is certainly not the first time we've been in this situation of course.
The event? Our 25-year high school reunion.Read More
I've been living without a calendar for a year now. It didn't happen by design and it didn't happen entirely by accident. The source of the change lies somewhere in between. Here's what happened.Read More
There’s a robin in our front yard, a very persistent, though misguided, robin, Let’s call him “Rob” for short. Rob has been visiting our front yard for three years now.
He eats the berries off our Saskatoon bushes and Chokecherry tree, poops the seeds on my bike’s handle bars and pecks at the seat.
But that's not all Rob does...Read More
How about right here on earth?
Mark Watney is no normal human being. He’s a NASA astronaut, but that’s not what makes him extraordinary. He’s also an astronaut who’s been left for dead, left to fend for himself on a desolate red planet. He has to deal with the fact that he’s all alone with no way to communicate with earth. Worse even, he also has to contend with the fact that he’ll surely run out of food before a rescue mission can reach him—that is if Mars’s inhospitable environment doesn’t manage to claim him first.
What’s most fascinating about this real page-turner of a novel, is what we can learn from Mark’s adventures and how it applies to life right here on earth.Read More
The day has finally arrived. Netflix has unleashed the third season of its insanely popular TV series “House of Cards”. I’ve been waiting for its arrival with bated breath since the announcement of its release some weeks ago.
Not wanting to welcome its arrival unprepared, I’ve been skimming through the past two seasons, (re)watching the most critical episodes to ensure my memory of the crescendo is crisp—to be certain I won’t miss a single reference to past events. For additional context, I’ve even drunk every word of Michael Dobb's book upon which the series is based. One could say I’m more than prepared for the new twists and turns awaiting the Underwoods.
Why is this series so….powerful?Read More
We all live in a box. Many boxes, actually. Some feel comfortable and safe, some feel too small, and others overwhelmingly large. Either way, they’re still boxes.
These boxes are categories that define us. Each of these categories carries with it rules related to behaviours and expectations to which no one is immune.Read More
If you’re a regular visitor, you won’t be surprised that I read a lot of books about money. I read about having it, saving it, spending it, investing it, how to think about it, how to feel about it…you get my drift. In short, there is SO much to think about that it can leave us overwhelmed.
But what if I told you that’s not the currency that scares me most these days?Read More
As some of you may already be aware, there are two movies that really resonate with me from a philosophical perspective. One of these is The Matrix and the other? The Devil Wears Prada. The concept of choice is a fundamental theme that runs through these two movies and anyone watching them would be hard pressed to not consider what that might mean in their own lives. It certainly did for me and still does.Read More
It's 1:30 in the afternoon and the weather's perfect. The crew at Victoria Falls Bungee have just strapped me in and they've done all the necessary safety checks to ensure I'm good to go. They're now helping me move to the edge of the platform because my ankles are secured with tight straps around two thick layers of folded towels to protect my legs from the jarring they're about to receive. My toes are over the edge, I look out over the Zambezi river and then I hear it..."3-2-1...BUNGEE!"Read More
